SMS Marketing Campaigns:
7 Rules to Live By
Being able to communicate immediately with your customers is an exciting possibility, but in reality, there are many pitfalls. SMS marketing is still in many ways the wild wild west of marketing. That’s why we’ve put together a number of best practice guidelines to help you not only future-proof your business but to create more meaningful relationships with your contacts.
1. Build a list with intention and permission
Getting your contacts’ permission to send messages is vital. It validates that they know who you are and want to hear from you. Get contacts to opt into your campaigns by using promotions or loyalty programs. For example, a restaurant could offer a free appetizer for opting into their weekly specials text, or a store chain could have their loyalty program based on mobile number and becoming a part of that program allows for text messages. It is also a great idea to cross-market using email, website, social and in-person advertising.
Finally (and perhaps most importantly) it’s important to always provide an opt-out mechanism in the first interaction. Take opportunities to remind contacts in the initial auto-response that ‘msg & data rates may apply’ as well. Build trust with your brand by always offering honest and comprehensive communication.
2. The right message to the right person
3. Get personal
4. Timing is everything
5. Less is more
6. Fun is the best thing to have
7. Always include a call-to-action
